Sadly, I have to wonder if anything so fun would ever grace Sesame Street again. Surely, such music is Not Safe for Children any more. (And yet? That one kid looked like he was having a ball.)

Oh, the kid in the red shirt! Yes, he definitely had Funky Feet (and not in a bad way).

Apparently Sesame Street has become less adult-friendly in recent years. I guess they feel parents are less likely to watch these shows with their kids, or something.

There's also just the general trend of talking-down to children. People have become reactionary about their kids "growing up too fast" to the point where they will do anything to keep them young, including infantilizing them by underestimating their intelligence. Or good musical taste.

To be entirely fair, the target age of Sesame Street has been shifted downwards.

That's a problem, too. I severely dislike the idea of getting kids to TV faster or at an earlier age. I love TV. I love film. But kids should really get more stimulation than either can provide. So, ideally, it would keep targeting the older demographic and leaving the really young to do more with time. Alas, I know this is often an unattainable ideal in the modern world.

I think keeping the show at the more mature level while throwing in the bits about ABCs, 123s, etc. is better than keeping it at a deliberately immature level and letting them outgrow it faster, too. Growing with the show is important to interacting with it better.

The purpose of the show has changed. Thankfully here's less need now for a televised educator for urban children 5-7, but the need 3-5 remains.
