Crappy Infrastructure
My Internet problem seemed to clear up on Sunday and was fine on Monday (two days in which I largely away from home, alas). Today it is, once again, slow as molasses. No WoW or videos again, goddam it. [info]bigscary said this was a problem throughout Queens, but I don't know how to check progress in fixing it. (As always, the useless Verizon website just says "system status unavailable, try again later." Grrr.)

I wonder how many of my problems are due to me living in west Queens. It seems our infrastructure is always breaking down -- we lose power for days, subway lines are closed down every weekend, the buses used to always be on strike -- but no one seems to do much about it. These are immigrant communities where no one complains much due to low expectations and weak ties to the neighborhood.

verizon sucks in general, but it's a private endeavor (yes, I know, they have no incentive to get better because the cable company sucks as well).

As for the trains, complain to your state representatives who nixed the congestion pricing that would have generated oodles of money that would have gone into public transit infrastructure improvements.

It's too bad he can't get Fios. Up here Verizon is a broadband diety, and not just because Cablevision sucks ass.

Didn't say "throughout Queens". But the big Verizon building near me has signs all over it saying there's a major outage (bad enough that people have lost dial tones and 911), and you ARE directly across the water from me (basically).

Well in fairness I didn't hear it directly, but through [info]jlc, so it's no surprise wires got crossed somewhere.

It's nice that Verizon put those signs up, but really, I wish they'd let those of us who don't live in your neighborhood know. I suspect Upper East Siders are calling their Congressmen about this, which is why Verizon bothered to keep them up to date, while folks in Astoria just shrug their shoulders and find something else to do.
